Resource Center : Jack Mangham Biography and Nomination Form
Jack Mangham was a native of Louisiana and received his degree in Business Administration from Louisiana State University in 1948, after serving in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946. His first professional position was with Pan American Airways, in New York and Africa, from 1948 to 1950. In 1951, Jack began his Federal Government career with the State Department Foreign Service, stationed in Washington, D.C., France, Italy, and Bolivia. This ended in 1963 when he went to the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C. and then transferred to Atlanta. He retired from the Agency in 1973 and began working with Georgia Power Company, first with recruiting, then becoming the Coordinator for their large centralized Co-op program. In 1986, Jack began another career, as Assistant Director of the Cooperative Education Division at Georgia Tech, a position he held until February 1993. He returned briefly in 1994, to fill in at Georgia Tech when a coordinator had resigned, once again doing what he loved to do most--work with students, his "Great Young Americans."
Not only did he administer one of the largest centralized Co-op programs in the country, he participated in many professional organizations as well. He was a member of the Georgia College Placement Association, the Southern College Placement Association (where he served as president), the Cooperative Education Association (where he won the Kettering Award for exceptional service in Co-op), the Cooperative Education Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (where he served on the Executive Board and was the given the Borman Award for meritorious service to the field), the Georgia Tech Executive Roundtable, and the Georgia Power Company Employee Forum.
Jack Mangham was mentor to many, and a friend to all. Although he is personally missed, the influence of this individual will continue for years to come through the lives that he touched.
In recognition of this wonderful person, GACE presents awards to students in experiential learning programs every year. The award is given to four students in the following categories: Business, Education, Arts & Sciences and Engineering/Technology. The committee announces the winners at the annual GACE Conference in June. Each winner receives a gift and a monetary award.
