Oglethorpe University, a liberal arts university in Atlanta, GA, is seeking dynamic Assistant Director of Career Development with experience in career counseling/coaching diverse college student populations; career curriculum and program development, delivery, and assessment; and growing student access to experiential learning through internships.
The Assistant Director will focus approximately 50% of their time on career counseling/coaching/advising and 50% on programming, student engagement and outreach. The position will interact with internal and external stakeholders and maintain positive, collaborative relationships.
Career Counseling/Advising/Coaching
- Advise/Coach students individually, in groups, and virtually, on internship and job search and application processes; internship for credit program guidelines; resume/cover letter/personal statement reviews; mock interviews; and professional branding in a virtual space.
- Build, facilitate, and assess career development workshops, panels, and events that cater to student needs, interests, and identities.
- Curate meaningful and accessible career curriculum and teach for-credit career courses including, but not limited to, Senior Transitions and Career Development and Exploration.
- Work with students through their career curiosities and exploration and support the pursuit of experiential learning opportunities.
Programming and Outreach
- Develop strategic student outreach/marketing plans and materials.
- Maintain a working knowledge of Oglethorpe majors and academic opportunities to inform strategic employer engagements.
- Collaborate with on-campus stakeholders including faculty, Student Affairs, Alumni Relations, Student Success, etc. to develop meaningful programming for career development and exploration.
- Engage in the development of a virtual and hybrid career curriculum using various platforms.
- Collaborate on the development of a dynamic internship and applied learning program to ensure Oglethorpe students are ready to launch at graduation.
- Assist with the collection and assessment other student and alumni career related data through the First Destination Survey (FDS).
Additional Duties
- Maintain accurate and complete student, employer, and job records; collect and interpret data associated with career development programs; report meaningful findings to inform department processes and initiatives.
- Assist with the strategic planning, development, and implementation of career and professional development programming for the department
- Design and distribute the monthly newsletter.
- May function as a proxy in absence of the Director
- Participate in campus committees and taskforces.
- Office administration and other tasks or duties as assigned.
- Due to the nature of services and programming provided, some evenings and weekends are required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in psychology, business, human resources, communication, or a related discipline required.
- Prior work experience or internship in Career Development.
- Experience in diversity, inclusion or multicultural program management, career services, or employer relations. Demonstrated ability to work with students from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and constituencies.
- Proven ability to work independently and use sound judgment when making decisions.
- Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Collaborative and team-oriented work style.
- Experience assessing programs and making data-informed decisions.
- Ability to take initiative in a dynamic environment.
- Evidence of developing and maintaining positive relationships and partnerships.
- Demonstrated proficiency designing and delivering in-person, remote, and hybrid presentations.
- Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft programs (Team, Word, Excel, Power Point), Zoom, Canvas or similar learning management platform.
- Working knowledge of career services management software (e.g., Handshake, Symplicity, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education, human resources, a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with DACA and undocumented student populations.
- Demonstrated proficiency in using career assessment instruments.
- Coursework or certificate in career counseling, and career development theory and practice.
- Experience providing career counseling, coaching, or advising to college students.
- Experience developing and facilitating career-related curriculum for in-person and virtual settings.
- Professional experience in Human Resources, University Recruitment, or related field in corporate or non-profit setting a plus.
